A quiet Thursday morning turned tragic on October 29, 2026, along one of Central Jersey’s busiest commercial stretches. Around 5:09 a.m., 28-year-old Michelle F. Chitacapa was walking near the cross section of Route 18 and Racetrack Road when a driver traveling through the intersection struck her.
The impact triggered a rapid response from local emergency crews. Officers with the East Brunswick Police Department rushed to the scene immediately after dispatchers picked up an urgent 911 call reporting a hit pedestrian. Paramedics quickly loaded Chitacapa into an ambulance and transported her to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Despite the swift medical response and the best efforts of trauma doctor teams on duty, Chitacapa could not overcome the severe injuries sustained in the crash. Medical staff pronounced the 28-year-old East Brunswick resident dead shortly after her arrival at the facility.
The driver involved in the collision pulled over right away and remained at the scene. Authorities confirmed that the motorist did not report any physical injuries from the impact and cooperated fully with first responders as patrol cars taped off the roadway.
Investigators from the East Brunswick Police Department Traffic Safety Section have since launched an active review to piece together the exact sequence of events leading up to the impact. Patrolman Michael Manning is heading up the ongoing traffic investigation to determine speed, road visibility, and right-of-way factors at that hour.
