Eden Renae Lopez just wanted to get home. The Bakersfield man was riding in a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado early Saturday morning. He never made it. The truck rolled over on Lerdo Highway near Scaroni Avenue. Lopez and the other passenger went flying out the window.
The crash happened around 1:32 a.m. The driver was heading east. Things went wrong fast. The Silverado left the road and flipped onto its side on the north shoulder. Both men inside were tossed out during the wreck.
California Highway Patrol officers showed up to a grim scene. They checked the bodies and found a deadly detail. Neither Lopez nor the other man wore a seatbelt. The lack of restraints sealed their fate when the truck rolled.
Paramedics rushed over to help. It was too late for both victims. They were pronounced dead right there on the asphalt. The highway was shut down while investigators pieced the wreck together.
Lopez leaves behind a family in Bakersfield. They are now dealing with the sudden loss of a son and brother. The police report shows a simple mistake turned fatal in seconds.
Investigators are still looking at the road conditions. They want to know if speed or alcohol played a part. For now, the focus remains on the missing seatbelts.
The Silverado is gone, towed away as evidence. The families are left to plan funerals instead of holidays. It is a harsh reminder of what happens when you skip the click of a seatbelt.
